We Conservatives like to reminisce from time to time about the good old ways from the good old days. We can go on with fond memories about events, characters, food, cars, vacations etc. that are gone now but fun to contemplate. While we remember all those GOOD things it always happens that some not so good memories come to mind and we have to admit that everything was not all peaches and cream back then. We understand as Conservatives that it is not the Old that matters but the GOOD. We know that some Old things were Good and some other Old things were Bad. We can keep the Good and get rid of the Bad. Old is Old. Old is not necessarily good, nor is it necessarily bad. We carried on.

Over the last seventy years (my time) changes have happened, LOTS of changes – some big, many small. In the late 20th century and into the early 21st century the technological pace has picked up, astonishingly in some ways. That change of pace has been happening continuously for humanity through centuries of relentless application of mind to matter. From 1923 to 2023 the pace of life has been increasing with microwave broadcasting, motor vehicles, air transport, telephones, and on to computers, the internet and smart phones – all things digital. So now people think of those past decades as something of a dinosaur age when people ACTUALLY DIALED TELEPHONE NUMBERS!

Now, everything is digitally NEW. While the ‘digital revolution’ has been happening other NEW things have also come along. We have advances in medicine – too many to list here, advances in production technology, materials, electric cars, robots etc. etc. We are all ‘in on it’ eager for whatever new gadgets, entertainment, appliances that give us that ‘with it’ attitude that we like so much. But while we are busy getting our digital act together we cannot miss the fact that there are NEW things that are not so great – actually some NEW things are BAD. Fentanyl, surveillance systems, precision military death machines, online empowerment and anonymity for – anyone. We have to adjust our ‘with it’ attitude to maintain a sober assessment of how the hyper-active pace of life is affecting us. NEW is NEW. Some NEW things are Good, some are Bad. People are tuned in to that.

We Conservatives have a First Principle – If you know, are aware of, or understand  some Good then you have One choice in life – to direct yourself to what is Best. We admit the Fact of Goodness. It is Real and we know it. No procrastinating, no excuses, no I’ll get back to you on that – our understanding of Goodness is that we are at it all the time with the Best as our guide to life today and for our future. We know what Right is. We have it brought to us as children, from our parents and grandparents, at school, in church and in daily life. We know there are bad things in the world – disease, injury, hunger, crime. We know right from wrong. It is possible to contrive to be confused about it – But normal, intelligent people know that – Right is Right.

Normal intelligent people also know that Wrong is Wrong. Crime – robbery, larceny, assault and battery, abuse of women and children, all the way to murder – we know are Wrong. Not maybe, not sorta, not everything is relative y’know. People can get complicated. With all the action potential people have and the opportunities that millions of people meet with every day it is no surprise that some few people commit crimes. They do Wrong and must be confined and punished. In our New age, with all kinds of people interacting in all kinds of ways in a very high pace social reality we have been introduced to an attitude that seems new but has been around forever. With the constant whirl of events, broadcast commentary and digital chatter people have developed a notion that everything that goes flying by is not good or bad, right or wrong it is just ‘chaff’ disposable noise, or static – nothing to get all bothered about. People develop a notion that these New days are different from the Old days. Back then people were stuck with attending to lives and events because they couldn’t skip out on reality. They actually had to – live through everything that happened. But that was the Old days with the Old ways.

In these NEW days we can – never mind – about whatever we don’t want to look at, put up with, or pay attention to – because we can just switch the digital channel instantly. We can stay busy being NEW, all the time. We don’t have to bother with GOOD and BAD, RIGHT or WRONG. We can skip- skip away, skip out, skip responsibility. We aren’t stuck with the OLD – Old ways, Old attitudes, Old habits. We can get exercised about Right or Wrong – if it involves some politicized situation  (which is getting to be most things now), but most of the time we can just never mind about whatever.

But Conservatives have another Principle that they adhere to – Reality Always Wins. And while people these New days can never mind their way through life, Reality is preparing to deliver the Real News to everyone – no matter what ‘attitude’ you carry around. Reality has a message for the digital age – those GOOD things from the OLD days are still in style. They will ALWAYS be GOOD. Honesty, Courtesy, Intelligence, Decency, Responsibility, Contribution, Modesty, Patience, Determination are Not optional. Our New digital episode does not give us any exemption from Old virtues – they are just as true as they were two thousand years ago. And when a certain political party vilifies Conservatives for being Old fashioned and out of date – that OLD is WRONG – we must defeat that deceit and be blatant about the Truth that Right or Wrong does not depend on whether things are New or Old. We must always be careful to publicly proclaim that We are RIGHT to practice OLD virtues always and everywhere. Further we do not automatically agree that any NEW lifestyle or political attitude is Right just because it is New. We must stand against NEW schemes that are WRONG. The point and click lifestyle that prevails now does not give us a ‘way out’ of practicing a life of Goodness.

  • Honesty has not gone out of style.
  • Intelligence has not gone past its sell by date.
  • Responsibility has not been discontinued.
  • Decency is not a four letter word.
  • Conservatives can give our NEW society some GOOD advice.

Be a little less pointy and clicky, and a lot more Real. Real GOOD.
